  15. I have just grabbed the xmosaic binaries and report so far so good on a 
  16. Sun 4/330 running 4.1.3.  Haven't tested sound stuff yet, will try it
  17. on a Sparc2 tomorrow.  I have some questions, though....

  19. First of all, where can I find some good multimedia stuff for a demo
  20. of Mosaic to a local K-12 unified school district?  I just got dragged
  21. into this at the last minute, you know how these things are.  There's
  22. some good stuff in the Mosaic demo document, but I'm hoping to find
  23. stuff for both teachers and kids elsewhere, preferably at least some
  24. of it education related.  Are there URL's for good GIF sites,
  25. especially anything Space related?  I would love JPL or shuttle
  26. images, and sound files of astronaut stuff would go over really well.
  27. We'll be doing this over a T1 link, and are assuming a T1 for this
  28. particular site, so the more the merrier, and huge files are not a
  29. problem!

  31. A source for reading netnews via XMosaic would be good as well, I want
  32. to test the news interface but got a "disallowed" message when I tried
  33. to enter any of the groups in the netnews page.  I want to demo the
  34. "kids" and "sci" groups in particular to these folks; if the news
  35. interface is like the rest of mosaic, I feel pretty confident that
  36. K-12 can handle it trivially.  This was in the demo doc, by the way--
  37. the "Usenet" under the Documents menu doesn't even get me that far.

  39. This brings me to another question-- a number of the most important
  40. documents in the "Documents" menu seem to be inaccessible.  The
  41. "Information by Subject" "Data Sources by Service" and some other
  42. "meta-lists" are refusing to serve the documents.  Some sites may be
  43. inaccesible, but (for instance) I am seeing plenty of other stuff from
  44. info.cern.ch so why not these documents?

  46. Has anyone prepared an initial document which has resources for K-12
  47. teachers and students?  How about for small businesses or independent
  48. researchers?  The Gopher interface is great, but you can't easily
  49. distinguish between full-text documents, book reviews, and so on.  The
  50. folks who were looking over my shoulder this afternoon were quite
  51. disappointed when much of "the good stuff" turned out to be course
  52. descriptions, not documents.

  54. With respect to WAIS, I keep getting these WAIS pages that say <big
  55. type> foo.bar.baz is a WAIS server for some topic, but where do I go
  56. from there?  The "search keyword" is grayed out, even when the text
  57. says "a WAIS server which supports keyword searches on such and so".
  58. What might I be doing wrong?  Clicking in the "Search Keyword" area or
  59. actual box sometimes gets me a text prompt but it just beeps when I
  60. type!

  62. Given the cynicism of much of today's youth, you can understand why I
  63. want to overcome some of these issues before the demo Friday morning!

  66. One more question-- the school system in question may decide that it
  67. wants these (and other) tools but doesn't want to maintain their own
  68. Unix hosts, just to connect via Xterms or somesuch.  I have looked at
  69. the Mosaic copyrights and it looks like it would be legal for one of
  70. the commercial providers to put the binaries up or run a web server or
  71. whatever for the school system.  But what if the commercial provider
  72. wanted to let their regular customers use it too?  Would that still be
  73. legit, as long as their customers are buying an account, not buying
  74. Mosaic or any specific rights to use it?  I don't want to install this
  75. for some provider and then find out that I'm helping to violate UIUC's
  76. copyright!  Guidance on this would be appreciated....

  80. not the list.  I'll be happy to summarize the URL info if I get any,
  81. and will certainly pass on any K-12 demo-style document I end up
  82. generating.
